Prof. Fabrizio Zeri

In 1999, the first two silicone hydrogel contact lenses (CLs) were introduced to the market. The development of this new class of materials was driven by growing awareness of the importance of oxygen supply in preventing CL–induced hypoxic ocular changes. Since then, material innovation has progressed rapidly, with more than 30 different polymers developed in an effort to balance high oxygen permeability with other key properties including low modulus, low coefficient of friction, high wettability, and appropriate water content. The current market reflects this progress: silicone hydrogel lenses now dominate and represent a truly disruptive technology in the field of CLs.

Fabrizio Zeri is an Associate Professor at the University of Milano-Bicocca, and research Fellow at the College of Health and Life Sciences of Aston University (Birmingham, UK). He achieved his Diploma in Optometry at the ISSO of Rome and graduated in Experimental Psychology at “Sapienza University” of Rome where he also gained his PhD in Cognitive Neurosciences. He is FIACLE, FBCLA, FHEA and member of ISCLR. He is the Regional Director for Europe Africa and Middle East region of the IACLE and Associate Editor of the Editorial Board of Contact lens and Anterior Eye.
