Corneal nerves are key regulators of ocular surface homeostasis, driving tear secretion, blinking and epithelial maintenance. In dry eye disease, tear film instability and inflammation can damage these highly sensitive fibres, leading to altered morphology, changes in corneal sensitivity and neuropathic symptoms. This presentation explores how dry eye disease modifies corneal nerve structure and function and discusses emerging tools to measure these changes.

Emanuele Käser is an optometrist and PhD student at the Institute of Optometry FHNW and the University of Basel. Since 2023, his research has focused on the functional and morphological characteristics of highly sensitive corneal nerves, using novel approaches such as liquid-jet aesthesiometry and advanced imaging to investigate how dry eye disease alters the ocular surface.
