Emergency Eye Care as Primary Eye Care provider (E)
This presentation explores the evolving landscape of UK optometry following the introduction of independent prescribing (IP) rights. We will discuss how appropriately trained and experienced optometrists are now equipped to manage a diverse range of ocular diseases, effectively reducing the burden on secondary care while improving patient access to local, community-based treatment. Through a series of case presentations, we will demonstrate the successful management of conditions that historically necessitated ophthalmological referral.

Edward Farrant has experience across a broad range of optometric practice. He began his hospital career at Bristol Eye Hospital, working in glaucoma and emergency eye care clinics, before joining Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton in 2017.
In addition to his hospital work, he is a director of an independent optometry practice providing comprehensive eye care services, including emergency care and specialist contact lens clinics, in Taunton and Langport. He previously co-directed an optometry practice based within a medical centre in Bridgwater.
His varied clinical roles provide complementary experience across both hospital and community optometry. He holds higher diplomas in Independent Prescribing and Glaucoma, and has previously worked as a clinical supervisor at Cardiff University.
